Is this a real Hong Kong bank account I can use with local clients?

CHATS (HKD RTGS, operated by HKICL on behalf of HKMA) is used for high-value transactions and settles same-day during banking hours. There's no FPS per-transaction cap at the network level, though individual sending banks set their own limits, typically HK$10,000–HK$1,000,000.

What's the difference between HKD and offshore CNH, and do I need both?

HKD is Hong Kong's domestic currency. CNH is offshore renminbi, mostly traded and held in Hong Kong, used for cross-border RMB settlement with mainland China. They're different currencies with different rails. If your customers are Hong Kong-incorporated businesses, you want HKD. If they're mainland Chinese exporters or buyers settling in RMB through Hong Kong, you need a CNH account (we cover this on the CNY page). Many trading businesses end up with both.

Can I receive payments from mainland Chinese customers into this HKD account?

A mainland sender can technically pay you in HKD via cross-border bank transfer, but it goes through SAFE-controlled channels and is slow and paperwork-heavy on their side. In practice, mainland buyers either pay in CNY through a cross-border-licensed channel (which then converts to your preferred currency) or settle in USD via SWIFT. Hong Kong domestic clients are where the HKD account adds the most value.

If you're a foreign-based business invoicing Hong Kong customers, your income is generally outside the territorial scope, but the analysis is fact-specific. Confirm with a Hong Kong tax adviser before high-volume invoicing.

Convert when convenient, not urgently.
